How to Block Apps on iPhone While Studying

To block apps on your iPhone while studying, set a scheduled restriction with Screen Time or create a study plan in an app blocker such as Alpaca. Choose the apps that interrupt you, set your study hours, and leave the tools you need for coursework available.

The important distinction is whether you want a daily allowance or a block during a particular study session. A daily limit can leave plenty of scrolling time available at the exact moment you sit down to work.

Choose a method that fits your study session

What you wantWhere to start
A built-in way to schedule time away from most appsScreen Time schedules or Downtime, depending on your iOS version
A daily allowance for social media or gamesScreen Time app limits
A repeating block for selected distracting appsAn Alpaca Schedule plan
A focus session you can start immediatelyAlpaca Block Now
A puzzle or movement challenge before taking a scrolling breakAlpaca Challenge unlock mode

Start with a small list: the two or three apps you open without thinking. You can add more after you see what actually interrupts your work.

Option 1: Use the iPhone’s built-in Screen Time controls

Open Settings → Screen Time and enable App & Website Activity if needed. Use the scheduling controls for your study hours, or an app limit for a daily allowance. Review which apps remain allowed, and enable the relevant blocking option if offered. Menu names differ across iOS versions; Apple’s Screen Time guide has version-specific instructions.

For studying, a schedule matches a fixed work period better than a daily allowance. Check your exceptions before starting so you can still use your course materials.

Option 2: Create a repeating study schedule in Alpaca

Alpaca lets you choose distracting apps and create plans around your routine. For example, you could block social media from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, while leaving your study tools available.

1. Connect Screen Time

Open Alpaca and approve Screen Time access during setup. This permission lets the app apply the restrictions you configure.

2. Create a Schedule plan

Choose Schedule when adding a plan. Give it a name you will recognize, such as “Evening study.”

3. Select your distractions

Set List mode to Block List, then open Apps to block and select the apps that tend to pull you away from studying.

If you need YouTube for lectures, for example, think carefully before blocking it. Keep the first version of your plan narrow enough that you can complete your work without needing to change it.

4. Set your study hours

Under Block time, choose a start and end time. Under Repeat, select your study days.

An example setup:

  • Name: Evening study
  • Apps to block: Your distracting social and entertainment apps
  • Start: 7:00 p.m.
  • End: 8:30 p.m.
  • Repeat: Monday through Friday

5. Decide how breaks should work

In Unlock mode, choose the behavior you want:

  • Normal: Temporarily unlock directly without a challenge.
  • Challenge: Complete a challenge before temporarily unlocking.
  • No Unlock: The plan cannot be paused or temporarily unlocked through its normal controls.

Challenge mode offers puzzles and exercise challenges. A slide puzzle or Sudoku can suit a quiet library; movement may suit a break at home. Exercise challenges use the camera for on-device counting, while puzzles provide a camera-free option.

Choose Create Schedule, then check that the saved days, times, and selections match what you intended. Before relying on a plan for an important study session, test it during a short practice session.

Full access to Alpaca requires an in-app purchase. Check current prices and any eligible trial offer in the app.

Studying at a different time today? Use Block Now

A repeating schedule works for a regular routine. If you have an unexpected free hour between classes, Block Now lets you start a session immediately, with an optional end time.

Pick a task before you begin: finish one problem set, review one chapter, or draft one section of an essay. Set your block around that task, rather than choosing a long session you will struggle to use.

Keep your study tools available

A useful block should make it easier to work. Before starting, check whether you need:

  • Your school’s learning platform or authentication app.
  • A browser, dictionary, calculator, or reference app.
  • Messages or another way to coordinate a group assignment.

Select individual distractions carefully. A broad category can include an app you need for coursework. If a plan gets in the way, review its selections before your next session.

Why can I still open a distracting app?

Check the plan before adding stricter rules:

  1. Is it scheduled for now? Review the selected weekday and start and end times.
  2. Is the app actually selected? Check the saved block list.
  3. Is a temporary unlock active? Normal and Challenge modes can allow breaks.
  4. Is Screen Time access still enabled? Review the permission if restrictions are not applying.
  5. Are you opening the website instead? An app and its browser version are different routes to the same distraction. Review website selections too.

Restrictions depend on your settings and iOS permissions. No setup should be treated as a guarantee that every possible way around a block is prevented.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block only social media while keeping study apps available?

Yes. In Alpaca, use a Block List and select the individual distracting apps. Check your selections rather than blocking a broad category that might include study tools.

Can the block repeat every weekday?

Yes. Create a Schedule plan, set the start and end times, and select Monday through Friday under Repeat.

Do I have to exercise to take a break?

No. Challenge mode also offers slide puzzles and Sudoku. Normal mode allows a temporary unlock without a challenge, while No Unlock removes the plan’s pause and temporary-unlock options.

Is there a free built-in option?

Yes. Screen Time is built into iPhone. Start there if its scheduling and allowance controls fit your needs; see Apple’s linked guide for the controls on your iOS version.

Set up your next study session

Choose the apps that interrupt you most, pick your next study window, and decide how you want to handle breaks. Keep the first plan simple enough to use again tomorrow.

Explore Alpaca or download it on the App Store to create your study plan.
